"Petroleum Professionals in the Classroom"

The Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA) conducts classroom presentations through a Petroleum Professionals in the Classroom "Petro Pros" program. The Petro Pros program brings trained professionals from the Kansas oil and gas industry to the classroom to educate students about the science and business aspects of the Kansas oil and gas industry. Petro Pros use rocks, fossils, drill bits, maps, and other learning tools to demonstrate how oil and gas are formed, discovered, and produced and why oil and gas is so important to our economy and way of life. KIOGA has developed grade-level specific lesson plans and curricula that meet Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) learning standards for both science and social science. Petroleum professionals who volunteer their time to participate in the Petro Pros program receive training on the KSDE-approved curricula and lesson plans to ensure the program's credibility. KIOGA is providing standrads-based energy education, specifically aligned to KSDE learning standards, needed for utility in Kansas schools. With over 50 industry volunteers KIOGA's Petro Pros program reached over 2,000 Kansas students each year.

"Teacher Workshops" |
|
The Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA) teacher workshops are conducted throughout Kansas and are designed to assist educators in providing a model for collaborative learning using crude oil, natural gas, and energy issues. KIOGA has developed two teacher workshop themes. The first is entitled "Fossil to Fuels" and the second is "The Living Earth". Teachers learn activities for a solid earth science and energy curriculum and receive resource materials and classroom supplies. Through 2009, over 1,100 teachers from 35 school districts in 28 counties throughout Kansas have participated in KIOGA teacher workshops.

Montana Board of Oil and Gas

"Teacher Workshops" |
|

This event is sponsored by the Montana Board of Oil and Gas Conservation, offered yearly in the third week in June, and consists of one week of instruction and field experience. The course has been developed by Montana Tech’s Petroleum Engineering school. Participants get an all expense paid week long course that contains a petroleum curriculum designed for high school science classes, and teachers who attend get 40 credits toward the renewal of their teaching certificate.

"High School Essay Contest" |

MPA and the MBOGC sponsors an essay contest for high school aged students. This is our 4th year and we give away between $6000 and $7000 in cash prizes.

Western States Petroleum Association

"Derricks to Desks Teachers Seminar"
The Western States Petroleum Association offers a three-day educational seminar for teachers each summer. The course is offered through WSPA’s San Joaquin Valley office in the heart of California’s richest oil producing region. Participants experience an in-depth look at all facets of the petroleum industry, from its colorful history to the technology involved in drilling a well, the sale of gasoline at the pump, environmental protection, careers, and alternative energy. Teachers participate in seminars with industry experts, visit several local oil operations for a unique view of the industry. Part of the program focuses on lesson plans, projects, experiments and other ideas which may be integrated into classroom subjects at all grade levels. Field trips will include Kern County oil and gas field, Kern County Museum’s “Black Gold Exhibit”, the West Kern Oil Museum and an offshore tour off the Santa Barbara coast to view the 2nd largest natural oil and gas seeps in the world.
